Actively NEKed Badge

Lace up your boots, fill up your water bottle and getNEKed on the trails of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.

Enjoy stunning scenery with panoramic views, crisp mountain air, and an abundance of wildlife and nature. From a steep mountain trek to leisure family walks, the Kingdom’s diverse trail systems welcome hikers of all ages and abilities.

Each stop along the Eastern Trek offers an opportunity to go for a hike and enjoy the outdoors. Visitors in St. Johnsbury may enjoy a stroll downtown, a walk through the Town Forest, or perhaps an afternoon at Dog Mountain accompanied by your furry friend. As you head further north, Lyndon has their own Town Forest as well as a mile-long River Trail offering scenic views.

For more challenging hikes, head to the Burke, home to Burke Mountain and Kingdom Trails, both offer extensive hiking opportunities. In nearby Westmore, you can find Bald Mountain, the Kingdom’s third tallest peak. The Northwoods Stewardship Center also offers year-round recreation including over 18 miles of summer hiking trails as well as the Lang Brook Nature Trail.

The Eastern Trek is also home to the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, established in 1997 to conserve, protect, and enhance the abundance of native plant, fish, and wildlife species of the Connecticut River watershed.

Enjoy panoramic views of the mountains and waters as you hike the northernmost parts of the Kingdom. The views atop Jay Peak can’t be beat, and can be traveled by foot via the famous Long Trail, the country’s first long-distance hiking trail.

This area is also home to Big Falls State Park. The park includes a 35-foot waterfall with several short trailheads to reach the views of the falls and gorge.

Groton State Forest is well-known in the Farm & Field area, offering trail summits to popular trails including Big Deer Mountain, Owl’s Head, and Kettle Pond. Stannard Pond Peak takes you around Greensboro Bend, VT along a 3.3-mile trail perfect for an afternoon walk and spotting wildlife.

Situated at the center of the Kingdom, a cross-roads for all of the NEK areas, is Willoughby Lake. Visitors can ascend two well-known peaks, Mount Pisgah and Mt. Hor as well as nearby Bald Mountain and Wheeler Mountain.

We recommend using apps including TrailFinder and AllTrails for a comprehensive list of all hiking and recreational trails in the Northeast Kingdom.
