Haskell Free Library & Opera House

Founded in 1901, the Haskell Free Library and Opera House supports the cultural needs of the community on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border, both English and French, through access to information, reading material, a broad range of library services and programming as well as the visual and performing arts. As a heritage building and as a cultural centre, the Haskell plays a critical role in enriching the lives of its members and the community.

Catamount Arts

For more than 40 years, Catamount Arts has worked to make the arts a fundamental part of community life.

The only full-service arts center in northeastern Vermont, Catamount Arts has grown to be the cultural, entertainment, and arts home for 40,000 visitors each year.

Our mission is to inspire appreciation of and participation in the Arts, promote the Arts throughout the region, and cultivate the Arts as an integral part of community life.

Our vision is to serve as the Community Arts Organization and Box Office for the region, acting as an essential force for the Arts and enhancing the cultural climate of communities throughout Northeastern Vermont and Northwestern New Hampshire.

Since our humble beginnings as a traveling film presenter in 1975, Catamount Arts now offers foreign, independent, and classic films; exhibitions by local and regional artists; live music, dance, and theater performances; summer camps and arts education programming for children; a regional box office for more than 40 organizations; and a gathering space for community events.

We’re also the proud producers of the KCP Presents Performing Arts Series, bringing world-class professional performances to Vermont’s rural Northeast Kingdom; First Night North, one of only two family-friendly, alcohol-free New Year’s Eve performing arts festivals in Vermont; Circus Smirkus in St. Johnsbury; the EPIC Music Program and the Levitt AMP St. Johnsbury Music Series.

Bread & Puppet

Resistance of the heart against business as usual. We are the Bread & Puppet Theater because we offer good old sourdough rye bread together with a great variety of puppet shows, some good, some not so good, but all for the good and against the bad. The art of puppetry helps women, men and children alike to overcome the established order and the obsessive submission to its politics and consequent brutalities. -–Peter Schumann

Today, Bread and Puppet continues to be one of the oldest, nonprofit, self-supporting theatrical companies in the country.

Fairbanks Museum

Founded in 1891 based on a Victorian “cabinet of curiosities” collected by Franklin Fairbanks, the Fairbanks Museum inspires wonder and curiosity about our natural world. With an eclectic collection of animals and artifacts, shells and fossils, meteorites and meteorology, plus much more! Home to the SunCommon Eye on the Sky Weather Center and the Lyman Spitzer Jr. Planetarium, Vermont’s only public planetarium. All this under the triumphant arch of our classic Victorian building, a cornerstone of St. Johnsbury’s Historic Main Street District.
