Scenic Drives

Darling Hill Chapel Lookout – 9.8 miles

Start at Sanborn Covered Bridge in Lyndonville for a photo-op, then head north on US-5, continuing straight onto Route 114 before turning left on Darling Hill Road. Be sure to stop at The Chapel of the Holy Family and take in the breathtaking views of Willoughby Gap. Take a right at White School Road, keeping left, then take a right to return to Route 114 until you hit Café Lotti for lunch!

St. Johnsbury – Groton – Peacham – Danville Loop – 72 miles

Starting in St. Johnsbury take Rt 5 south thru Passumpsic, Barnet, and Ryegate. In Wells River turn right onto 302 West. Stop for lunch in Wells River at the P&H Truckstop. In Groton, take a sharp right onto Minard Hill Road, which continues to the Peacham-Danville Road. Stop along the way in Peacham Village for a short walk through the Peacham Corner cemetery and take a picture at Peacham Congregational Church, the most photographed church in VT, and grab a treat or beverage at the Peacham Cafe. When you get back on the road continue up to Danville for an afternoon at the Great Vermont Corn Maze, and a snack from Bentley’s Cafe or Three Ponds. There’s a lovely scenic overlook on Route 2 on your way back into St. Johnsbury for dinner. 

St. Johnsbury – Spaulding Road Afternoon Trip – 5.6 miles

Start at the First Congregation Church in St. Johnsbury on Breezy Road, turn left on Lackey Hill Road and take a slight right onto Spaulding Road. Continue on Spaulding Rd to Sweet Seasons Farm & Artisans Confections in St. Johnsbury for apple picking and treats. Then head southeast on Spaulding Rd for a visit to Dog Mountain (hiking trails, Dog Chapel, scenic views) before stopping for lunch at Papa Tirozzi’s new location (2165 Portland Street).  Stop at Maple Grove Farms of VT on your way back into town for a maple creemee and to learn the history of the industry that made St. Johnsbury the Maple Center of the World.

Mostly Moose Driving Route – 67 miles

Starting in Island Pond depart from the junctions of Route 114 and 105, drive north on Route 114 through Norton to Canaan. Take Route 102 South to Bloomfield and then Route 105 West back to Island Pond.

West Burke to Island Pond Loop – About 29 miles

Start with a scenic hike at Bluff Mountain in Island Pond, then take Route 5 to West Burke with a right on 5-A, right on Newark St. Follow Newark St. past the fish hatchery. You’ll come out on Rt. 114, turn left and visit Dirt Church Brewing before continuing back to Island Pond.

Chamberlin Mill Covered Bridge – Lyndon, VT

Located in Lyndon Corner on Mill Street crossing the South Wheelock Branch of the Passumpsic River. Built in 1881 and updated in 2002.

Miller’s Run Covered Bridge – Lyndon Center, VT

Located in Lyndon Center on Route 122 crossing Miller’s Run. Built in 1878 and updated in 1995.

Randall Covered Bridge – Lyndonville, VT

Located in the town of Lyndonville on Burrington Bridge Road crossing the East Branch of the Passumpsic River. Built in 1865 and restored in 2008.

Schoolhouse Covered Bridge – Lyndon, VT

Located in Lyndon Corner on the South Wheelock Road crossing the South Wheelock Branch of the Passumpsic River. Built in 1879.

Columbia Covered Bridge – Lemington, VT

Located in the town of Lemington on Route 102 crossing the Connecticut River. Built in 1912 and rehabilitated in 1981.

Island Pond Covered Footbridge – Brighton, VT

Located in the town of Brighton on the North Junction of SR105 and SR114 crossing the railroad tracks. Built in 2003.

Mount Orne Covered Bridge – Lunenburg, VT

Located in the town of Lunenburg on East Concord Road crossing the Connecticut River. Built in 1911 and rehabilitated in 1983.

Sanborn Covered Bridge – Lyndon, VT

Located in the town of Lyndon, this bridge crosses the stretch of river between Lyndon and St. Johnsbury. Built in 1867.
